BÁRCENA MAYOR

BÁRCENA MAYOR is located in the area of Cabuérniga, it´s the only village where people can lives into the Saja´s reserve.

This place, is the best example of rural architecture of all villages in Cantabria, probably because is the oldest town in Cantabria and maybe in Spain.

Well worth walking along it´s narrows streets,
discovering its medieval character and beautiful landscape; in a short tour, we can see hallways, laundries, bakeries, barns, stables and some tudanca cow.

In the town, one can find an ancient Roman Road that has been in continual use for almost two millennia. The houses and buildings are examples of the rural medieval stone mountain construction with wooden balconies and windows.

If you like craft, is a must to visit the work of the artisans from here, they to carve wood and are the best that we have in Cantabria; not only in the work of the balconies, also in others elements that are part of the ethnography of the region, such as sandals, the Cachava , silverware and everything that passes through the imagination of the master craftsman.

Whether you´re interested in architecture or craft or typical food, Bárcena is the ideal place in Cantabria.

No visit to Bárcena is complete without a photo of La Franca!
