Getting there
You can get to Solares by train (FEVE) in 30 minutes from Santander, by bus or by car taking the A-8 motorway. You will take only 15 minutes by bus or by car from Santander which is the capital city of Cantabria.
Check in
Accommodation in Solares can be both cheap and expensive, it depends on the type of place you want to stay in. For example, the most expensive hotel is Hotel-Balneario de Solares (00 34 942 52 13 13) in which a simple room costs 93 euros per night while the cheapest single room is about 15 euros per night in Pensión Rada.
Take a walk
Walking from Solares to Hermosa is the best way to spend a good afternoon watching the rural life of its inhabitants.
There is a route especially focused for fit people. This route is the one which goes from Heras to the top of Peña Cabarga, a gorgeous place where you will be able to observe almost every point of the region.
Lunch on the run
Cafetería el Sol is a bar where it is typical to eat pinchos or a coffee with a croissant while people of the village spend the afternoon.
Window shopping
There are no malls in the municipality but local shops where you could find whatever you want (shoes, clothes, antiquities…) and there is a market of clothes and food on Wednesday mornings in the centre of the village.
Take a view
A good panoramic view of the village and the landscape can be taken from a hill of the village, where the church of Santa María de Cudeyo is settled.
Dinner with the locals
A typical restaurant which is always crowded of people watching football or chatting while eating is Tutto Cuore, the best place to eat for few money. There is an Italian restaurant well-known in the area and a lot of restaurant which offers local food such as caricos (black beans) or arroz con leche.
Sunday morning: go to the temple
There is a church in each town of the municipality. They are Romanic churches and they are open from 9.00 am to 8.00 pm.
